MCAFEE DETECTS SECURITY BREACH FATIGUE, SETS OUT WARNING

Talking about the recent data breaches which are happening almost every day, the McAfee CEO Chris Young said that they are suffering from breach fatigue just like they suffered from skyjacking fatigue approximately fifty years ago. He said this while referring to the hijack fatigue and skyjacking attempts of the past. Hijackers had threatened to crash a plane in a nuclear reactor Oak Ridge in Tennessee in 1972.
In the RSA conference keynote, Chris Young compared the cyber threats of the present day to the skyjacking attempts of the 60s and 70s. Talking about the 1972 skyjacking attempt for a ransom of 10 million dollars, he recalled that the event shook the entire country out of the hijacking fatigue and initiated screening at airports. He also said that in spite of the added layers of security and protection, the wall connecting the flight deck and the outer world still remained somewhat permeable. This led to 2011.
He noted that instead of allowing something like a digital 9/11 to happen, it is wise to learn from the post 9/11 airline industry and add security into the fabric of the culture. He further stated that it is high time that people borrow a page from the airline industry in the aftermath of the twin tower attacks.
He said that most of the people still do not believe that cyber security is their job and responsibility. However, he added that a part of it is that they have not taken up the cultural layer in theirs. He stated there is a need to prioritize cyber security across the various spheres of the society including the public sector and the private sector, and amongst employees and consumers to ensure that true progress is made.
McAfee also released the cloud and security report “Navigating a cloud Sky” at the RSA conference. According to the survey done with over 1400 IT professionals, one out of four organizations which use public cloud have suffered from data theft. Advanced cyber attacks on the infrastructure of public cloud have been made on one out of five organizations. Moreover, approximately 83% of the survey takers store their confidential data in a public cloud system and 69% of the survey takers rely on public cloud to keep their confidential data secure.
Vittorio Viarengo, Vice President of cloud business marketing unit at McAfee, said that enhanced visibility is the key to data security. Approximately 97% organizations make use of cloud services and 87% use their personal devices for work purposes. Viarengo added that in the world where people are not the owner of most of the infrastructure or devices, there is a need to reclaim visibility. First step is to find out where the data is and who can access it, then policies can be put on it.
A month back, McAfee launched its first cloud security product “Azure Cloud Security” after the SkyHigh purchase. In the RSA conference McAfee announced a new CASB Connect Program which will permit cloud service providers and partners to put up API connectors to MCAfee Skyhigh Security Cloud without having to write a code. This will not only improve the visibility and also enforce security policies.
